Warning signs in the chair

Most warning signs appear before you book. A few only show up once you are in Antalya. Here is what they look like, and what you can do.

Short answer

Be cautious if the plan grows a lot on day one without a clear explanation, if you are pressured to decide on the spot, if a different dentist appears without warning, if steps are rushed or skipped, or if questions are brushed aside. You can pause, ask for reasons in writing, get a second opinion, or decline treatment.

You have done your research, chosen your dentist and flown to Antalya. Most of the time, the week goes as planned. But it helps to know what a problem looks like early, while you can still do something about it. These are the signs to watch for, and what to do.

1. The plan grows a lot on day one

Some change after the 3D scan is normal: the bone may be thinner than the old X-ray suggested, or a tooth may be worse than it looked. But if four implants become eight, or six veneers become twenty crowns, you need a clear reason.

What to do: ask the dentist to show you on the scan, tooth by tooth. Ask for the reasons in writing. Ask what would happen if you only did the original plan.

2. Pressure to decide now

“This price is only for today.” “We need to start this afternoon.” Pressure is a sales technique, not a clinical need.

What to do: say you need time to think. A good dentist will give it. Read the consent form.

3. A dentist you have not heard of

You were told one dentist would treat you, and someone else appears.

What to do: ask who they are, their role and why the change. You can ask to wait for the dentist you chose. Read who does what in the room.

4. Steps skipped or rushed

No proper examination before treatment. No scan before implants. No try-in before veneers are cemented. Veneers fitted the day after preparation with no chance to see them.

What to do: ask for the missing step. For veneers, ask to see them in your mouth before they are fixed. Read the trial smile.

5. Questions brushed aside

“Don’t worry about that.” “Everyone has this.” A dentist who will not answer clearly before treatment is unlikely to do better after.

What to do: ask again, more specifically. If you still do not get an answer, pause.

What to do: do not start until you have both, in a language you can read.

7. Not numb, and not stopping

If you feel sharp pain and the dentist does not stop when you signal, that is a serious problem.

What to do: agree a stop signal before you start. If it is ignored, insist on stopping.

8. Aftercare you do not understand

You are sent back to the hotel with a bag of medicines and no instructions you can read.

What to do: ask for written instructions in English and a number to call at night.

Your options

  • Pause: ask for a day to think.
  • Ask for reasons in writing.
  • Get a second opinion: ask for a copy of your scan and show it to another dentist, in Antalya or at home.
  • Decline: you can leave. Ask what you will be charged for the consultation and scan.

How to avoid most of this

Almost all of these problems are less likely if you choose a named dentist, meet them before you book and agree a written plan. Read choosing a dentist in Antalya.

Keeping a calm record

If something worries you, keep a short written record on your phone: the date, who you spoke to, what was said and any change in price or plan. Take photos of documents. This is not about preparing for a dispute; it simply helps you think clearly and explain the situation to your companion, your UK dentist or the clinic manager. Most concerns are resolved quickly once they are put clearly.

Talking to the clinic manager

If you cannot resolve something with your dentist, ask to speak to the clinic manager or the responsible dentist. Explain calmly what you were told before you travelled and what has changed. Ask what they propose. A clinic that values its reputation will want to put things right while you are there.

Signs that are usually fine

Not every surprise is a red flag. These are common and normally fine:

  • A small change to the plan after the scan, explained and shown to you.
  • A nurse or assistant doing the scan, photos or cleaning.
  • A wait in the waiting room because an earlier patient took longer.
  • Being asked to come back the next day for a check.
  • Temporary teeth that feel bulky at first.

The difference is explanation. When a good dentist changes something, they tell you why without being asked.

If you decide to stop

Ask for copies of your scan, X-rays and any notes. Ask for a written statement of what you have paid and what for. If you have had partial treatment, such as extractions, ask what you need to do to heal safely and what you should tell a UK dentist. Then take time to decide what to do next. Read UK follow-up support.

Prevention is better

Choosing a named dentist, meeting them by video and agreeing a written plan before you book removes most of these risks. Read shortlisting three dentists.

How UK guidance frames this

The NHS treatment abroad checklist encourages patients to check the qualifications of the person treating them, to make sure they understand the treatment and its risks, and to think about what will happen if something goes wrong after they come home. The GOV.UK travel advice for Türkiye has a health section that includes medical tourism. Neither tells you not to travel. Both point to the same thing this article does: you stay in charge of decisions about your body, including in another country.

Three short scenarios

“You need more implants than we said.”

A reasonable response: “Please show me on the scan where the bone is thin, and explain what happens if we use the original number.” If the dentist shows you clearly and the reason makes sense, it may be the right call. If the answer is vague or the price is the main topic, ask for time.

“We will do your veneers tomorrow, so we prepare today.”

A reasonable response: “When will I see what they will look like?” A trial smile, a digital design or at least a try-in before cementing protects you. Read the trial smile.

“Dr X is busy, Dr Y will do your surgery.”

A reasonable response: “Who is Dr Y, what is their role and experience with this surgery, and can I meet them first?” You can also ask to wait. Read the dental team.

Warning signs after treatment

  • No written aftercare, or instructions you cannot read.
  • No out-of-hours number.
  • Being told not to worry about swelling that keeps growing.
  • No records offered: scans, implant details, materials.
  • Pressure to post a review before you have healed.

Each of these is worth raising before you fly home. Read the last appointment before you fly.

Keeping perspective

Most treatment in Antalya goes smoothly, and many concerns turn out to be misunderstandings that a short conversation clears up. The aim of this list is not to make you suspicious of everyone, but to help you notice the few signals that matter and act calmly on them.

Warning-sign checklist

  • Any change to the plan was shown on the scan.
  • I was given time to decide.
  • The dentist treating me is the one I agreed.
  • No step was skipped.
  • I have written aftercare and a night number.

Common questions

Can I refuse treatment after travelling to Antalya?

Yes. You are not obliged to start treatment because you have travelled. Ask what you will be charged for consultation and scans.

Is it normal for the plan to change on the first day?

Some change is normal after a 3D scan. A large increase should come with a clear explanation, shown on the scan.

What should I do if I feel pressured?

Say you need time. Ask for the plan and reasons in writing. Talk to your companion or your UK dentist.

Can I get a second opinion in Antalya?

Yes. Another clinic can look at your scan. You are entitled to a copy of it.
