Treatment plans with more than one visit

Implants are a two-part job with a pause in the middle. Here is what happens on each trip, and why the gap matters.

Short answer

Most implant treatment needs two trips: the first to place the implants and fit temporary teeth, the second, about three to six months later, to fit the final teeth once the bone has healed. Veneers and crowns usually need one trip of about a week. Ask who will treat you on each visit and get it in writing.

Why two visits

An implant is a titanium post that needs to bond with your jawbone. That takes time, usually three to six months. Final teeth are made and fitted after that, once the implants are solid. So implant treatment abroad is normally two trips, with months of healing at home in between.

Veneers, crowns and most smile makeovers are different: they can usually be done in one trip of about a week, because no bone needs to heal.

Visit one: the foundation

  • Consultation, 3D scan and final plan.
  • Extractions, if needed.
  • Implant surgery, sometimes with a bone graft or sinus lift.
  • Temporary teeth, often fixed on the same or next day for full-arch cases.
  • Check appointments, then a final check before you fly.

The months between

You live with temporary teeth, eat soft food and keep the area clean. Your dentist should stay in touch, usually by photos over WhatsApp. If anything feels loose or sore, tell them early. Read implant aftercare.

Visit two: the final teeth

  • The dentist checks that the implants have healed.
  • New scans or impressions for the final teeth.
  • Try-in appointments, where you see and test the teeth before they are finished.
  • Fitting, bite adjustment and cleaning instructions.
  • Your records and implant passport.

Keeping the same dentist

The dentist who placed your implants knows how the surgery went, how the bone looked and what to watch for. Ask before you book whether they will see you on the second trip, and write their name into your plan. Read choosing a dentist.

At Precious Dental

Our implant package includes hotel nights for both trips (4 nights on the first, 5 on the second) and airport and clinic transfers. Flights are not included. All-on-6 for both jaws is £6,500 in total, including implants, zirconia teeth, titanium bar, temporary teeth, extractions, X-rays and medication.

Planning your dates

Book the first trip with a few spare days if you can. For the second trip, wait for your dentist to confirm the timing from your healing. Read travel and recovery.

Common questions

Why can't implants be finished in one trip?

The bone needs months to fuse with the implants. Fitting final teeth too early risks the implants failing. Some clinics fit fixed temporary teeth on the first trip so you are not without teeth.

How long between the two trips?

Usually three to six months. Your dentist decides from how your bone heals.

Will the same dentist see me on both trips?

Ask. It is best if the dentist who placed the implants also checks them and fits or oversees the final teeth.

What if I cannot travel at the planned time?

Tell your dentist early. A delay of a few weeks is usually fine; your temporary teeth may need checking.
