Choosing a dentist you feel comfortable with

Qualifications tell you whether a dentist can do the work. How you feel with them tells you whether you can trust them to.

Short answer

On a video call, notice whether the dentist listens before they talk, explains in plain words, answers your questions directly, admits what they do not know, and does not rush you. If you would prefer a female or male dentist, say so; many clinics can arrange it. Comfort is a fair reason to choose one qualified dentist over another.

When patients tell us why they chose a dentist, the answer is often not a qualification. It is “she explained it properly” or “he didn’t rush me”. That instinct is sound. A dentist you feel comfortable with is a dentist you will be honest with, ask questions of, and call when something feels wrong.

What comfort looks like

  • They listen first. They ask what bothers you before they tell you what you need.
  • They explain in plain words, and check you understood.
  • They answer the question you asked, not a different one.
  • They say what they would not do, as well as what they would.
  • They admit uncertainty: “I need to see the scan before I can say.”
  • They are not in a hurry.

What discomfort looks like

  • Talking over you, or only to your companion.
  • Pushing the biggest treatment.
  • Making you feel silly for asking.
  • Answering clinical questions with sales language.

Testing it on a video call

A ten-minute video call tells you a lot. Ask one question you already know the answer to, and see how they explain it. Ask what they would do if they were you. Ask what could go wrong. Notice how you feel at the end. Read meeting your dentist.

Male or female dentist

Some patients prefer a dentist of a particular gender, for personal, cultural or religious reasons, or simply because they feel more at ease. That is a reasonable request. Many Antalya clinics have both male and female dentists. Ask before you book, and check the names on the A–Z list. At Precious Dental, Dt. Şeyda Yılmaz is our female dentist and leads aesthetic work.

Language and accent

Even when a dentist speaks good English, accents and speed can make it hard to follow. Ask them to slow down, or ask for the key points in writing. Read English-speaking support.

Comfort for nervous patients

If you are anxious, how a dentist reacts to that is the best test of all. Read nervous patients.

Comfort is not a substitute for checks

Choose among dentists who are properly qualified for your treatment. Then let comfort decide. Read choosing a dentist in Antalya.

Trust your first impression, then test it

First impressions are useful but not perfect. A dentist who seems brisk on a video call may simply be busy that day. A very charming one may be better at selling than at dentistry. So use your first impression as a starting point, then test it with specific questions: ask about a risk, ask what they would not do, ask who will treat you. The answers will either confirm your feeling or change it.

Things that build trust quickly

  • They remember details from your message without being reminded.
  • They show you your X-ray and point to what they mean.
  • They give you the reason behind a recommendation, not just the recommendation.
  • They suggest something smaller or cheaper when it would work.
  • They tell you what they need to see on the scan before they can be sure.

When your companion feels differently

Sometimes you like a dentist and your partner does not, or the other way round. Talk about why. Often the companion noticed something you missed because you were focused on your own teeth: a question that was dodged, a price that changed, a rushed answer. Equally, a companion may react to a manner or an accent rather than substance. Write down what each of you noticed and look at it together.

Comfort over two trips

For implants, you will see your dentist on two trips months apart, and message them in between. That is a relationship, not a single appointment. A dentist you feel at ease with is one you will send honest photos to, tell when something is sore, and trust when they say something needs another look. Read treatment over two visits.

Changing your mind

If you have booked with a dentist and the first appointment in Antalya leaves you uneasy, you are allowed to stop and think. Ask for the plan in writing, ask the questions that worry you, and take the evening to decide. You can ask for a different dentist at the same clinic, or ask for your scan and take a second opinion. It is far better to pause on day one than to regret it for years. Read warning signs in the chair.

A short exercise before your video call

Write down three things that matter to you in how a dentist treats you. For many people the list looks like this: “explains things without jargon”, “doesn’t rush me”, “tells me honestly if something is a bad idea”. Keep the list in front of you during the call. Afterwards, give the dentist a mark out of five for each. It is a simple way to turn a feeling into something you can compare across two or three dentists.

Cultural differences that are not red flags

Some UK patients find Turkish clinics more direct, warmer or more hands-on than they are used to. Dentists may speak more quickly, coordinators may message late in the evening, and decisions may be talked through with your companion as well as you. None of that is a problem in itself. The test is whether you are respected: whether your questions are answered, your choices are yours and your “no” is accepted.

Comfort for patients with hearing or sight problems

If you have hearing loss, ask for important information in writing and for the dentist to face you when speaking, without a mask if possible during the consultation. If your eyesight is poor, bring your reading glasses and ask for forms in large print or to have them read aloud. These are reasonable requests, and a good clinic will accommodate them.

Meeting our dentists

If you would like to see whether you feel comfortable with one of our dentists, ask for a video call before you book. Read their profiles first: Dt. Hüseyin Yavuz Özbek for implants, and Dt. Şeyda Yılmaz or Dt. Hüseyin Bayram for veneers and smile design. Then compare how you felt with each of the other dentists on your shortlist.

Comfort checklist after a call

  • I felt listened to.
  • I understood the explanation.
  • My questions were answered directly.
  • I was told about risks without being frightened.
  • I was not pushed to decide.
  • I would be happy to message this dentist if something went wrong.

If you can tick all six, you have probably found someone you can work with. Read meeting your dentist.

Trust your notes

After two or three calls, impressions blur. Write a few lines straight after each one: what you liked, what worried you, and one thing the dentist said that stuck with you. When you come to decide, those notes are more reliable than memory.

Common questions

Can I ask for a female dentist in Antalya?

Yes. Many clinics have female dentists. Ask before you book. Our A–Z list shows each clinic's named dentists.

Is it reasonable to choose a dentist because I like them?

Yes, among dentists who are qualified for your treatment. You will be more likely to ask questions and report problems.

What if I do not feel listened to?

Say so, or choose another dentist. Feeling unheard before treatment rarely improves during it.

Should I meet more than one dentist?

If you can, yes. A short video call with two dentists makes the difference clear.
